Let it shine: All the reasons to love LED walls

If you’re still watching plasma TV at home, you’re in the minority - and we hate to say it, but a probable embarrassment to your teenagers. As they will tell you in no uncertain terms, plasma technology for home use was pretty much declared dead nearly a decade ago.

While some plasma screens are still in production, when it comes to an event and gaining the respect of your kids and audience, we think that LED (Light Emitting Diodes) technology outshines plasma in many ways.

Why plasma probably isn’t the brightest idea for your event

While plasma TVs offer good colour accuracy and saturation, they’re nowhere as bright as LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) or LED screens. Plus, due to screen glare, they’re unsuitable for spaces with ambient light. So, if you have a display at a big conference venue, have hired a room with a stunning natural backdrop, or are using an outdoor event, you need to darken the entire venue or wait for nighttime to see what’s on screen.

And not to be too negative, but plasma screens are also unfashionable energy guzzlers.

Why does LED outshine the rest?

By comparison, LED truly makes the most of any situation.

If you’ve been impressed by your home TV with its average of 300 nits (a nit is a unit of measurement that describes how bright your screen is - basically, the higher the number of nits, the brighter the display), you’ve not seen anything yet.

An 8000 Lumen projector is ~300 nits on a 4-metre-wide screen, and the same projector is ~600 nits on a 2.4-metre screen. Our amazing Samsung Event TVs are 500 nits bright – but hold on to your hats - our LED screen is up to 1200 nits bright.

Sound too bright? Don’t worry; we can turn it down if needed.

What’s the difference between LCD and LED?

While very similar in concept, LCDs use fluorescent lights to illuminate your onscreen images, whereas LEDs use light-emitting diodes. These LEDs can be placed at the back of the screen (aka a ‘backlit LED’ or ‘full array lighting’) or around the edges of the screen (called ‘edge lighting’).

What you really need to know, though, is that an LED delivers much better and more realistic image quality than an LCD (so your logo and images will always look amazing). The colours are sharper, and they offer great viewing in a room or outdoor arena with ambient light, so you don’t need to compromise the impact of your venue.

And they use less energy than either plasma or LCD.

Wall-to-wall impact with LED

With LED, black is black. As the screen is essentially made up of myriad tiny lights, when they’re off – they’re off. So, if you want to black out your room, there’s no screen glow to spoil the impact. Or if you’ve gone heavy on the black-white contrast in your presentation content – you can be assured you won’t have to settle for grey-white.

You can also light up your presenters to full advantage without washing out whatever’s on the screen. There’s no need to compromise – the screen and your presenters both get to look great.

Another advantage is that LEDs are light, so they can be placed more easily in positions normally considered ‘tricky.’ For example, you can hang an LED screen from the ceiling! And as our LED screens are modular, you can be innovative and immersive – wrapping them around corners, into odd shapes, or set into the stage furniture.

You can also get clever and present within a frame, highlighting your logo/s or branding. (Check out what we did for Cultiv8 below.)

Pixel perfection

Then, there’s LED and pixel pitch. That is, the vertical and horizontal gaps between individual LED pixels on an LED video wall or LED screen.

Without getting technical, the closer together the pixels are, the better the outcome. Our LED walls are jam-packed full of close-up pixels, delivering superior resolution and quality to your onscreen images.

Be a showstopper

The days of projecting washed-out PowerPoint slides onto the screen are long past, as is settling for old embarrassment-inducing plasma technology.

LED walls amplify your impact and let you reimagine how you convey your message and imagery with brightness and brilliance.
